WebJul 5, 2024 · I have four basses with roasted maple necks and I agree with the description above - it does darken/mellow the tone a bit, but in a nice way. The consistency of the wood is definitely different after roasting - quite noticeable when drilling holes; the wood seems a bit harder/more brittle, and the sawdust has kind of a chalky consistency.

It sounds more similar to a Maple neck in that sense, so I think the "darkness" of a Rosewood neck comes from the 2 piece construction, not just the tonewood.
